Why most chargebacks fail — and how to avoid it

Key fact
Wrong reason code
Every chargeback needs a specific reason code — a number that tells your bank what type of dispute it is. Using the wrong one is the single most common reason chargebacks are denied immediately. We give you the exact code for your case.
Key fact
Missing or wrong evidence
Banks need specific documentation depending on the dispute type. “I didn't get what I paid for” is not enough. You need to submit the right evidence in the right format. Our checklist tells you exactly what to include.
Key fact
Poor timing
You have 60–120 days from the charge date depending on your card network. Filing too late is an automatic denial. Filing too early — before contacting the merchant — can also hurt your case. Timing matters. We tell you exactly when to file.

Chargeback scenarios we cover

Item not received
Paid for goods that never arrived
One of the most common chargeback cases. Reason code: Visa 13.1, MC 4853. Evidence: order confirmation, tracking showing non-delivery, merchant refusal.
Item not as described
Product significantly different from listing
Covers counterfeit goods, major quality issues, wrong item. Must show material difference from what was described at time of purchase.
Cancelled recurring
Charged after confirmed cancellation
Strong grounds under Visa 13.3 / MC 4853. Requires cancellation confirmation and evidence merchant was notified before charge.
Duplicate charge
Charged more than once for same transaction
Straightforward — requires two matching charges on statement. Banks typically resolve these quickly.
Services not rendered
Paid for service that wasn't delivered
Covers contractors, events, software, travel. Need to show payment was made and service was not delivered as agreed.
Unauthorized transaction
Charge you didn't authorize
Fraud-related. Consumer protections include zero-liability rules under Visa/MC. Act within 60–120 days.

Common questions

What's the difference between a refund and a chargeback?+
A refund comes from the merchant voluntarily. A chargeback is a forced reversal you initiate through your bank — it goes around the merchant entirely. Chargebacks are more powerful but require proper documentation and a valid reason code.
Will a chargeback hurt my credit score?+
No. Filing a chargeback does not affect your credit score. It's a consumer protection mechanism, not a credit event.
Can a merchant sue me for filing a chargeback?+
In theory, yes — but it's extremely rare and only happens in cases of clear abuse (filing chargebacks for transactions you did authorize and did receive). For legitimate disputes, merchants virtually never pursue legal action.
What happens after I file a chargeback?+
Your bank issues a provisional credit (usually within 5–10 days), then investigates. The merchant can respond with a rebuttal within 30 days. If they don't respond or their rebuttal is weak, you win. We prepare you for both scenarios.
Can I file a chargeback if I already accepted a partial refund?+
Yes, but only for the remaining disputed amount. Accepting a partial refund can complicate your case — we'll advise on whether it's better to reject the partial refund and dispute the full amount instead.
What if the merchant disputes my chargeback?+
Merchants can submit a rebuttal within 30 days. This is called "representment." If they do, your bank reviews both sides. Strong evidence — especially a paper trail showing the merchant's refusal — is what wins at this stage. We prepare you for it.
